RESUMO

Freeze-thaw effects pose the significant challenge to asphalt pavement durability, leading to various types of distress and deterioration. This study investigates the freeze-thaw damage mechanism of Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene (SBS) asphalt mixtures containing reinforcement fibers, specifically basalt fiber as well as lignocellulosic fiber, through a microscopic void characteristics analysis. This investigation aims to understand how the presence of basalt fiber as well as lignocellulosic fiber influences void characteristics for SBS asphalt mixtures during freeze-thaw cycles. A comprehensive experimental program was conducted for the void and mechanical characteristics, which involved the preparation of SBS asphalt mixtures containing basalt fiber as well as lignocellulosic fiber. The mechanical performances of the two types of asphalt mixtures decrease with more freeze-thaw cycles. The decline is faster initially and gradually slows down. Basalt-fiber-modified SMA-13 has higher air void content and mechanical properties compared to lignocellulosic-fiber-modified SMA-13, indicating that adding basalt fibers improves the mechanical performances of SMA-13 asphalt mixture. Both types of asphalt mixtures experience increasing damage with more freeze-thaw cycles, indicating irreversible damage. The stability damage levels are similar, but basalt-fiber-modified SMA-13 has lower splitting strength damage and stiffness modulus damage compared to lignocellulosic-fiber-modified SMA-13. This suggests that adding basalt fibers enhances the resistance to freeze-thaw damage. Surface wear of asphalt mixtures under repeated freeze-thaw cycles is a complex and dynamic process. Fractal theory can uncover the mechanism of surface wear, while describing surface wear behavior and void deformation characteristics using fractal dimension, angularity, roundness, and aspect ratio is a logical and effective approach. The findings provide insights into freeze-thaw damage mechanisms at the microscopic level, highlighting the effects of reinforcement fibers. They provide valuable insights that can be used to optimize the design and maintenance of asphalt pavements.

RESUMO

The viscoelastic properties of open graded friction course (OGFC) are closely related to anti-permanent deformation ability, noise reduction ability and durability. To study the viscoelastic parameters of OGFC under dynamic and static loads and to establish the functional relationship between them, uniaxial compression creep tests and dynamic modulus tests were performed to obtain the creep compliance and the dynamic modulus of OGFC. In addition, the Burgers model, modified Burgers model, second-order extensive Maxwell model, Scott-Blair model and modified Sigmoid model were employed to quantitatively analyze the dynamic and static viscoelastic properties of OGFC. Subsequently, the relaxation modulus of OGFC was deduced by the viscoelastic theory. Then, the dynamic modulus of OGFC was calculated according to the deduced relaxation modulus. Based on the calculated values and the measured values of dynamic modulus, the functional relationship of viscoelastic parameters of OGFC under dynamic and static loads was established. The results show that the increase in test temperature has adverse effects on the viscoelastic indexes of OGFC, such as creep compliance, relaxation modulus, and dynamic modulus; the dynamic modulus derived from static creep compliance has a good linear correlation with that obtained by dynamic modulus tests, but the correlation of the phase angle is poor.

RESUMO

This paper studies the mechanical properties of porous asphalt concrete with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified bitumen as the binder, steel slag as the aggregate and crumb rubber and basalt fiber as modifiers. First, the appearance, mechanics, chemical composition and high-temperature stability of steel slag were studied by some equipment. Then, three kinds of porous asphalt concrete with SBS polymer modified bitumen as binder were produced, Namely, crumb rubber modified porous asphalt concrete (CR-PAC), basalt fiber modified porous asphalt concrete (BF-PAC), and basalt fiber and crumb rubber composite modified asphalt concrete (CM-PAC). Finally, the properties of the three kinds of modified PACs were studied through the Marshall test, freeze-thaw splitting test, low-temperature splitting test, permeability test, and creep test. The results showed that the crush value and abrasion value of steel slag are 15.1% and 13.5%, respectively; it has excellent strength and abrasion. In addition, the steel slag shows a porous structure and it provides an interface basis for a better bond with bitumen. For the three PACs, the results showed that the Marshall stability, water stability, and low-temperature crack resistance of CM-PAC are all the best Furthermore, CM-PAC has better rutting resistance than two single modified PACs, based on creep test results. The CM-PAC in this study can be used as a new type of pavement material.

RESUMO

This paper presented a laboratory investigation for analyzing the natural frequency response of reinforced concrete (RC) beams affected by steel corrosion. The electrochemical acceleration technique induced the corroded RC beams until the predetermined value of the steel corrosion ratio was achieved. Then, the natural frequency responses of the corroded beams were tested utilizing piezoelectric acceleration sensors. The damage states of the corroded beams were assessed through the measurement of crack parameters and the equivalent elastic modulus of the beams, which aims to clarify the fundamental characteristics of the dynamic response for the corroded RC beam with the increased steel corrosion ratio. The results revealed that steel corrosion reduces the bending stiffness of the RC beams and, thus, reduces the modal frequency. The variation of natural frequency can identify the corrosion damage even if no surface cracking of the RC beam, and the second-order frequency should be more indicative of the damage scenario. The degradations of stiffness and the natural frequency were estimated in this study by the free vibration equation of a simply supported beam, and a prediction method for the RC beam's residual service life was established. This study supports the use of variations in natural frequency as one diagnostic indicator to evaluate the health of RC bridge structures.

RESUMO

This study aims to study the viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixtures incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber under freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles by using the static creep test. Asphalt mixture samples incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber were manufactured following the Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) method and coring as well as sawing. After 0 to 21 F-T cycles processing, a uniaxial compression static creep test for the asphalt mixture specimens was performed to evaluate the influence of F-T cycles. The results indicated that the F-T cycles caused a larger creep deformation in the asphalt mixtures, which led to a decrease in the rut resistance of the asphalt mixtures incorporating SBS polymer and basalt fiber. Besides, the resistance to deformation decreased significantly in the early stage of F-T cycles. On the other hand, the viscoelastic parameters were analyzed to discuss the variation of viscoelastic characteristics. The relaxation time increased with F-T cycles, which will not be conducive to internal stress dissipation. Compared with lignin fiber, basalt fiber can improve the resistance to high-temperature deformation and the low-temperature crack resistance of asphalt mixtures under F-T cycles.

RESUMO

This study aims to study the freeze-thaw (F-T) resistance of asphalt mixture incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber by using the established complex master curves of the generalized Sigmoidal model. Asphalt mixture samples incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber were manufactured following the Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) method and coring as well as sawing. After 0-21 F-T cycles processing, a complex modulus test asphalt mixture specimen was performed to evaluate the influence of the F-T cycle. Besides, according to the time-temperature superposition principle, the master curves of a complex modulus were constructed to reflect the dynamic mechanical response in an extended range of reduced frequency at an arbitrary temperature. The results indicated that the elastic and viscous portions of asphalt mixture incorporating SBS and basalt fiber have decreased overall. It could be observed from the dynamic modulus ratio that the dynamic modulus ratios of specimens were more affected by the F-T cycle at low frequency or high temperature. Thus, in the process of asphalt pavement design and maintenance, attention should be paid to seasonal frozen asphalt pavement under low frequency and high temperature.

RESUMO

Basalt fiber has been proved to be a good modified material for asphalt mixture. The performance of basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture has been widely investigated by extensive researches. However, most studies focused on ordinary static load tests, and less attention was paid to the dynamic mechanical response of asphalt mixture incorporating with basalt fiber. This paper aims to establish the master curve of complex modulus of asphalt mixture incorporating of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber using the generalized Sigmoidal model. Both loading frequency and temperature were investigated for dynamic mechanical response of asphalt mixture with basalt fiber. In addition, based on the time-temperature superposition principle, the master curves of complex modulus were constructed to reflect the dynamic mechanical response at an extended reduced frequency range at an arbitrary temperature. Results indicated that the generalized Sigmoidal model in this paper could better reflect the dynamic mechanical response accurately with correlation coefficients above 0.97, which is utilized to predict the dynamic mechanical performances accurately. Simultaneously, the modulus values exhibit an increasing trend with loading frequency and decrease versus temperature. However, the phase angle values showed different trends with frequency and temperature.

RESUMO

This paper aims at the freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles resistance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt mixture reinforced with basalt fiber in order to explore the performance evaluation and prediction of asphalt mixtures at seasonal frozen regions. Asphalt was firstly modified by the common SBS and then SBS-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) specimens with basalt fiber were prepared by using Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) method. Next, asphalt mixture specimens processed by 0-21 F-T cycles were adopted for the high-temperature compression test, low-temperature splitting test and indirect tensile stiffness modulus test. Meanwhile, a three-dimensional model of F-T damage evolution of the mixtures was also established based on the reliability and damage theory. The test results showed that the loss rates of mechanical strength increased rapidly, and then gradually flattened; however, these indications changed significantly after 15-18 F-T cycles. In addition, the exponential function could reflect the variation trend of the mechanical performances with F-T cycles to a certain degree. The damage evolution and prediction model based on the reliability and damage theory can be established to analyze the internal degradation law better.

RESUMO

Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) and Marshall compaction methods are essentially designed according to volumetric properties. In spite of the similarity, the optimum asphalt contents (OAC) of the two methods are greatly affected by the laboratory compaction process, which would further influence their performance. This study aims to evaluate the performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) with basalt fiber by using SGC and Marshall compaction methods. Basalt fiber was proved to improve and strength the basic properties of SBS-asphalt according to test results of asphalt binder. The effects of SGC and Marshall compaction methods on OAC and volumetric properties, i.e., density, air voids (VA), voids in mineral aggregates (VMA), and voids filled with asphalt (VFA), were evaluated in detail. Finally, the pavement performance of asphalt mixture prepared by SGC and Marshall compaction methods were compared in order to analyze the high-temperature creep, low-temperature splitting, and moisture stability performance. Results showed that the OAC of SGC (~5.70%) was slightly lower than that of Marshall method (5.80%). Furthermore, the pavement performance of SGC specimens were improved to a certain extent compared with Marshall specimens, indicating that SGC has a better compaction effect and mechanical performance.

RESUMO

This study focuses on improving the performance of asphalt mixture at low- and high- temperature and analyzing the effect of diatomite and basalt fiber on the performance of the asphalt mixture. Based on the L16(45) orthogonal experimental design (OED), the content of diatomite (D) and basalt fiber (B) and the asphalt-aggregate (A) ratio were selected as contributing factors, and each contributing factor corresponded to four levels. Bulk volume density (γf), volume of air voids (VV), voids filled with asphalt (VFA), Marshall stability (MS) and splitting strength at -10 °C (Sb) were taken as the evaluation indexes. According to the results of the orthogonal experiment, the range analysis and variance analysis were used to study the effect of the diatomite content, basalt fiber content and asphalt-aggregate ratio on the performance of the asphalt mixture, and the grey correlation grade analysis (GCGA) was used to obtain the optimal mixing scheme. Furthermore, the performance tests were conducted to evaluate the performance improvement of asphalt mixtures with diatomite and basalt fibers, and the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests were carried out to analyze the mechanism of diatomite and basalt fibers in asphalt mixtures. The results revealed that the addition of diatomite and basalt fiber can significantly increase the VV of asphalt mixture, and reduce γf and VFA; the optimal performance of the asphalt mixture at high- and low-temperature are achieved with 14% diatomite, 0.32% basalt fibers and 5.45% asphalt-aggregate ratio. Moreover, the porous structure of diatomite and the overlapping network of basalt fibers are the main reasons for improving the performance of asphalt mixture.

RESUMO

In this paper, the performance of a warm-mixed porous asphalt mixture (PAM) with steel slag as aggregate and crumb-rubber⁻SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) modified bitumen as a binder was studied. Two kinds of warming additives were used, namely ethylene bis stearic acid amide (EBS) and stearic acid amide (SA). The mixtures were investigated for their permeability, Marshall stability, low-temperature crack resistance, and underwent a rutting test, water sensitivity evaluation and Cantabro particle loss test. Then, the viscoelastic and dynamic characteristics of the mixtures were also analyzed. The results showed that the addition of the warming additives allowed the decrease of the manufacturing temperature by 10 °C. Thus, the addition of warming additives significantly improves the low-temperature crack resistance and slightly reduces the water sensitivity, weakly increases the permeability, and has little effect on the resilient modulus. Since the addition of SA significantly improves the low-temperature crack resistance and rutting resistance of the PAM, SA is therefore recommended for pavement engineering in seasonal frozen regions.

RESUMO

The main distresses of asphalt pavements in seasonal frozen regions are due to the effects of water action, freeze-thaw cycles, traffic, and so on. Fibers are usually used to reinforce asphalt mixtures, in order to improve its mechanical properties. Basalt fiber is an eco-friendly mineral fiber with high mechanical performance, low water absorption, and an appropriate temperature range. This paper aims to address the freeze-thaw damage characteristics of asphalt mixtures (AC-13) reinforced with eco-friendly basalt fiber, with a length of 6 mm. Based on the Marshall design method and ordinary pavement performances, including rutting resistance, anti-cracking, and moisture stability, the optimum asphalt and basalt fiber contents were determined. Test results indicated that the pavement performances of asphalt mixture exhibited a trend of first increasing and then deceasing, with the basalt fiber content. Subsequently, asphalt mixtures with a basalt fiber content of 0.4% were prepared for further freeze-thaw tests. Through the comparative analysis of air voids, splitting strength, and indirect tensile stiffness modulus, it could be found that the performances of asphalt mixtures gradually declined with freeze-thaw cycles and basalt fiber had positive effects on the freeze-thaw resistance. This paper can be used as a reference for further investigation on the freeze-thaw damage model of asphalt mixtures with basalt fiber.

RESUMO

This study proposed an asphalt mixture modified by basalt fiber and diatomite. Performance of diatomite modified asphalt mixture (DAM), basalt fiber modified asphalt mixture (BFAM), diatomite and basalt fiber compound modified asphalt mixture (DBFAM), and control asphalt mixture (AM) were investigated by experimental methods. The wheel tracking test, low-temperature indirect tensile test, moisture susceptibility test, fatigue test and freeze⁻thaw cycles test of four kinds of asphalt mixtures were carried out. The results show that the addition of basalt fiber and diatomite can improve the pavement performance. Diatomite has a significant effect on the high temperature stability, moisture susceptibility and resistance to moisture and frost damage under freeze⁻thaw cycles of asphalt mixture. Basalt fiber has a significant effect on low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt mixture. Composed modified asphalt mixture has obvious advantages on performance compared to the control asphalt mixture. It will provide a reference for the design of asphalt mixture in seasonal frozen regions.

RESUMO

Asphalt pavement located in seasonal frozen regions usually suffers low-temperature cracking and freeze⁻thaw damage. For this reason, diatomite and basalt fiber were used to modify asphalt mixtures. An indirect tensile test was used to determine the low-temperature performance of the asphalt mixture. The influences of freeze⁻thaw (F⁻T) cycles on strength, tensile failure strain, stiffness modulus, and strain energy density were analyzed. The variation of the stress⁻strain curve under F⁻T cycles was analyzed. The stress⁻strain curve was divided into a linear zone and nonlinear zone. The linear zone stress ratio and linear zone strain ratio were proposed as indexes to evaluate the nonlinear characteristics of the stress⁻strain curve. The results show that the basalt fiber⁻diatomite-modified asphalt mixture had better low temperature crack resistance and antifreeze⁻thaw cycles capacity compared to the control asphalt mixture. The F⁻T cycles made the nonlinear characteristics of the stress⁻strain relationship of the asphalt mixture remarkable, and also decreased the linear zone stress ratio and linear zone strain ratio. The damage constitutive model established in this paper can describe the stress⁻strain relationship after F⁻T damage well.

RESUMO

Morphological characteristics of aggregates have direct impacts on performances of asphalt mixes. This paper aims to investigate the effects of the morphological characteristics of fine and coarse aggregates on the high-temperature viscoelastic properties of asphalt mortars and mixtures. For this purpose, an experimental proportion scheme was designed for asphalt mixes prepared with three different types of aggregates (basalt, andesite and pebble/river sand) based on the simplex lattice design (SLD) method. Three morphological parameters were chosen to characterize shape, angularity and texture of aggregates. Afterwards, the uniaxial compression creep test was conducted for asphalt mixes and the high-temperature viscoelastic properties were obtained based on Burgers model. The effects of fine and coarse aggregates on the viscoelastic properties are analyzed through asphalt mortars and mixtures, respectively. The results showed that aggregate morphological characteristics correlate with the high-temperature viscoelastic properties of asphalt mixes, especially for fine aggregates. Aggregates with complex morphological characteristics are conducive to improving the deformation recovery and anti-deformation of asphalt mixes. Furthermore, coarse aggregates can enhance the anti-deformation of asphalt mixture effectively due to its skeleton effect.

RESUMO

Aggregate is an indispensable raw material for asphalt pavement construction. This study evaluates the influences of aggregate morphological characteristics on the high- and low-temperature viscoelasticity of asphalt mixtures. Based on simplex lattice mixture design (SLD), asphalt mix samples were designed and prepared with the same gradation but three different types of aggregates. Subsequently, three morphological characteristics of aggregate (roundness, perimeter index, and erosion-dilation area ratio) are presented to characterize fine and coarse aggregates. Then based on Burgers viscoelastic model, uniaxial compression static creep test was carried out to analyze the high-temperature viscoelastic properties for asphalt mortar and mixture. Meanwhile fitting Prony series models have been utilized to represent relaxation modulus conversed from creep compliance and the low-temperature relaxation characteristics can be also discussed. The experimental results indicated that morphological characteristics of aggregate, especially fine aggregates, are strongly correlated with the viscoelastic parameters of asphalt mixtures. However, the complex morphological characteristics of aggregates have opposite influences on the high- and low-temperature viscoelastic parameters. Therefore, when considering both high- and low-temperature viscoelastic properties, the aggregate proportion was optimized for the appropriate morphological characteristics, which will provide a reference for asphalt mixture design.

RESUMO

This paper investigates the effects of basalt fiber content, length and asphalt-aggregate ratio on the volumetric and strength properties of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified asphalt mixture reinforced with eco-friendly basalt fiber. An experimental scheme was designed to optimize three preparation parameters for the Marshall test indices based on response surface methodology (RSM). The results showed that basalt fiber content presents a more significant effect on air voids, voids in mineral aggregates and voids filled with asphalt. Basalt fiber length is more related to Marshall stability, and flow value exhibits a significant variation trend with asphalt-aggregate ratio. The optimization of preparation parameters is determined as follows: basalt fiber content is 0.34%, length is 6 mm, asphalt-aggregate ratio is 6.57%, which possesses favorable and reliable accuracy compared with experimental results. Furthermore, basalt fiber reinforced asphalt binder and mixture were also studied, and it was found that basalt fiber can enhance the performance of asphalt binder and mixture in terms of cone penetration, softening point, force ductility, as well as pavement performance tests.

RESUMO

The amount of boron waste increases year by year. There is an urgent demand to manage it in order to reduce the environmental impact. In this paper, boron waste was reused as an additive in road base material. Lime and cement were employed to stabilize the waste mixture. Mechanical performances of stabilized mixture were evaluated by experimental methods. A compaction test, an unconfined compressive test, an indirect tensile test, a modulus test, a drying shrinkage test, and a frost resistance test were carried out. Results indicated that mechanical strengths of lime-stabilized boron waste mixture (LSB) satisfy the requirements of road base when lime content is greater than 8%. LSB can only be applied in non-frozen regions as a result of its poor frost resistance. The lime-cement-stabilized mixture can be used in frozen regions when lime and cement contents are 8% and 5%, respectively. Aggregate reduces the drying shrinkage coefficient effectively. Thus, aggregate is suggested for mixture stabilization properly. This work provides a proposal for the management of boron waste.

RESUMO

The molecular basis for group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR1 and 5) coupling to membrane ion channels and intracellular calcium pools is not fully understood. Homer is a family of post synaptic density proteins functionally and physically attached to target proteins at proline-rich sequences. In the present study, we demonstrate that Homer1b/c is constitutively expressed in PC12 cells, whereas Homer1a, the immediate early gene product, can be up-regulated by brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and glutamate. Knockdown of Homer1b/c using specific target small interfering RNA (siRNA) did not interfere the expression of mGluR1, mGluR5 and their downstream effectors, including inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (IP3R), phospholipase C (PLC) and Gq proteins. By analyzing Ca(2+) imaging in PC12 cells, we demonstrated that Homer1b/c is an essential regulator of the Ca(2+) release from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) induced by the activation of group I mGluRs, IP3R and ryanodine receptors (RyR). Furthermore, the group I mGluRs activation-dependent refilling of the Ca(2+) stores in both resting and depolarizing conditions were strongly attenuated in the absence of Homer1b/c. Together, our results demonstrate that in PC12 cells Homer1b/c is a regulator of group I mGluRs related Ca(2+) homeostasis that is essential for the maintenance of normal Ca(2+) levels in the ER.
